The First Offender DAE program is for individuals who are convicted
of a driving-under-the-influence first offense violation and choose
to participate in the educational program option of Massachusetts
General Laws, Chapter 90, Section 24D, as an alternative to losing
their driver’s license or possible incarceration. The program
provides structured psycho educational groups over a 16-20 week
period in which participants learn to identify and understand
alcohol and drug use and abuse issues and driving under the
influence behavior. Referrals to the program are only by the court.
If under age 21, the Department of Motor Vehicles may mandate the
offender’s participation.
